A journey to meet Empress Jito

Japan HeritageFujiwara Palace Site

This is the former site of a palace that stood in Japan’s largest ancient capital, Fujiwara-kyo. Having overseen the planning of Fujiwara-kyo, Emperor Tenmu passed away soon after its construction had begun. It was Empress Jito who, in fulfilling her husband’s dying wishes, ensured that construction of the capital was completed. This historic legacy symbolizes a magnificent story of nation-building. Fujiwara Palace contained a number of important buildings within an area of one square kilometer. The area included ceremonial and administrative buildings—such as the Daikokuden and Chodo-in—along with the Inner Palace, where the imperial family resided. It was like having present-day Tokyo’s Imperial Palace, National Diet Building, and Kasumigaseki bureaucratic district all rolled into one. The Fujiwara Palace site is also an excellent place to enjoy seeing seasonal flowers in full bloom. It also affords spectacular views of Yamato Sanzan—the three mountains of Yamato. The view of the ridge lines of these mountains has been designated an “Important Landscape View” by the city of Kashihara.
