A journey to meet Empress Jito

Japan HeritageNakatsu-michi Road

It is believed that Empress Jito—when she was still Princess Unono-sarara—took this road when traveling with her husband and son (Prince Kusakabe) to Yoshino from the palace in Otsu. As one of the principal roads of Fujiwara-kyo, Nakatsu-michi connected the capital with its surrounding areas. This road was also an important part of the planning of Heijo-kyo (Japan’s 8th century capital), as it connected to that capital’s Higashi-kyogoku-oji road.
