Japan HeritageMoto-yakushiji Temple Ruins
This is the ancient site of a temple that Emperor Tenmu began building so that his empress consort (later to become Empress Jito) could recover from illness. Jito eventually completed construction of the temple according to her husband’s dying wishes. On the site, you’ll find stone foundations of the main hall and of a pagoda’s central pillar, along with other remains. Mount Unebi (one of the Yamato Sanzan) lies in the background, giving visitors a view truly befitting an ancient imperial temple site. In the fall, the nearby rice paddies turn into a sea of water hyacinths.
