Japan HeritageShimano-miya Palace Site
This is the palace that Princess Unono-sarara and Prince Oama visited on their way to Yoshino, not long before they became Empress Jito and Emperor Tenmu. The fugitive nobles must have spent a night in trepidation, concerned about their new secretive life in Yoshino and about the political upheaval leading up to the Jinshin dispute. Shimano-miya—a residence with a notable garden—was originally owned by Soga no Umako of the powerful Soga clan. It later became the palace of Empress Jito’s son, Prince Kusakabe.
