A journey to meet Empress Saimei

Japan HeritageAsuka Inabuchi Palace Site

Some say this is the ancient site of Asuka Kawabenokari-miya, a palace built near the Asuka River that was briefly used by Empress Kogyoku when she relocated the capital from Naniwa (present-day Osaka). An archaeological excavation in 1976 revealed the remains of earthfast-post buildings and a cobbled square. The arrangement of the buildings and the absence of roof tiles (which at the time were limited to use on temples) suggested that this was an ancient palace site. Earthenware and ink stone dating from the mid- to late 7th century were also found here.
