Japan HeritageAsukakyo Enchi Ruins
These are the remains of an imperial garden. Influenced by China, Empress Saimei had this garden built next to her palace as a banquet space. The banks of the pond were reinforced with stone, and cobbled stone was laid along the bottom. In the south part of the pond was a 1.65-meter high stone fountain. Research indicates that this fountain may have been connected to the Demizu Sakafune-ishi, a stone structure believed to be a water conduit. Empress Saimei is said to have had this garden built to entertain overseas guests.
