Asukadera was Japan’s first full-scale temple. Come and pay your respects to the oldest Buddha statue in the country. Asukadera was built during Empress Suiko’s reign. The extensive temple complex included three kondo (main halls) surrounded by a roofed passageway. The original buildings were lost in two fires, which also damaged the Asuka Daibutsu. The face, ears, and fingers are the only original remaining parts. It is said Pei Shiqing was invited to observe the construction of this statue.
